RITA THIVIERGE

Rita Thivierge was born in Quebec City and grew up in Montreal. She studied Fine Arts and Graphic Design in both Canada and the United States.

As a young artist and in the course of her career as a graphic designer, her natural talent led her to Montreìal, New York City and San Francisco. After returning to Quebec City, she completed master’s level workshops as part of the Laval University summer arts program in Gaspeìsie and has presented her art work in over twenty exhibits in the United States, Quebec City and Ontario.

My art is focused on colour and its light properties.

I draw my inspiration from Nature and her thousands of constituent parts; the creative possibilities are thus unlimited. My aspiration is to grasp and delimit in the present moment an image of that which is infinite, wondrous and ephemeral.

My paintings evolve in the following manner: Starting with a landscape image that has etched itself in my memory, I transpose color, form and transparency onto the canvas. I choose a palette that reflects the emotion of the present moment. Layers of color are then superimposed to create a depth and transparency that lead to multiple sensory experiences — sometimes it’s a sense of profundity or distance that is experienced, and other times, a sense of closeness. In building form, I aim for a balanced composition. I thus develop lines and masses in relation to their trajectory, suppleness and density and as a function of their difference or interrelatedness, all in an attempt to “see beyond.” I want to create an atmosphere, an impression, an inner landscape. In this way, images arising from joy emerge onto the canvas and color bursts forth, opening the door to inner peace.

As a whole, my art takes a contemporary approach to landscape images.
