Stewart Hood – Jazz electric and Classic Acoustic Guitars
Stewart first learned playing jazz standards on his guitar in Toronto’s Malvern Collegiate Dance Band in 1960. He also played French Horn in Malvern and East York High School concert bands. In the mid 60’s, he joined a rock band that became Edward Bear, and it went on to become one of Canada’s top rock bands. Stewart had to leave it in ’67 as his learning and marks at OCA were suffering. He then went on to play occasionally at clubs like The Old Mill on Bloor St. West. He also played every Friday night for a few years in a 7-piece nightclub band on Danforth Avenue. Stewart and his wife Lynn moved to Trenton in 2004 and in 2013 he asked 2 players – a bassist and flutist in the Trenton’s Citizen’s Band to form the Class Act Trio. This trio plays light popular jazz, bossa nova and some original songs at events, parties and wineries throughout Quinte area and PEC.
Veronique Kwakkernaat – Concert Flute and Alto Flute
Veronique emigrated from the Netherlands September 9th 1971, and started playing flute in 1972 at 13 in Middleton N.S. She obtained double honours degree in French & Spanish at Carleton University in 1981 and Bachelor of Education at University of Toronto in 1983. She studied under Donelda Gartshore in Kingston during the late eighties and started playing flute and piccolo in the pit orchestra at Pinnacle Playhouse, Belleville in 1986. She joined the 8 Wing Concert Band at CFB Trenton in 1990, and the Brighton All Star Community Band in 2013. She’s been a flute instructor at Pinnacle Music School since 2003. She started taking Cello lessons from Linda Minty in February 2014, and performs regularly with harpist Angelica Ottewill and the Praise and Hymn Worship Orchestra under the direction of Linda Minty. Veronique also performed with the Belleville Choral Society. Currently she’s also playing flute and Alto flute with the established Class Act Trio, playing 4 sets of 10 songs each at PEC wineries, city functions, private functions like at The Seasons Retirement in Trenton and hopefully again for the Quinte Business Achievement Awards - as the Class Act Trio has played it for several years.
Ben Shubert – Bass Guitar
Ben comes from a legacy of community involvement and music. He is the son of Bronwen Schubert (née Wannamaker), who, together with her five siblings, make up the Wannamaker Family singing group; and the grandson of Bob Wannamaker, who served on Quinte West city council for 46 years and spearheaded many of Quinte West’s music & cultural programs. Ben’s musical horizons expanded in Grade 8 when the music program returned to Murray Centennial Public School in 2002. After trying trumpet, alto sax, and trombone during the school year, Ben found his way to bass guitar by his first year of high school at ENSS. He played in the school Concert Band, as well as school groups JazzEh! and RazzMaJazz. All throughout high school, Ben played in bands with his friends, with styles such as rock, grunge, pop, and (reluctantly) country. He was a member of the headlining band at the school’s semi-formal dance 3 out of the 4 years that he was there.
After attending University of Western Ontario from 2011-2016, starting a family, and working for 4 years in Markham, Ben returned with his family to the Quinte area in 2020 and soon after started playing with the Trenton Citizens Band. It was there that he met Stewart Hood, who asked him to join the Class Act Trio in the fall of 2024. Ben will also play bass in the Little Mermaid production that ENSS presented in May 2025.
