Vineyard Notes
The 2023 growing season was a roller coaster from start to finish. The growing season started off about 10 days behind with most vineyards reaching bud break around May 10th. Weather during bloom and leading up to veraison saw well above normal temperatures and plenty of moisture. By mid July, conditions turned very cool and wet with plenty of humidity leading to increased disease pressure in the canopies. This weather continued into the end of August setting the stage for a late start to the vintage. Thankfully, weather conditions turned favorable from early September onwards with perfect ripening weather. Harvest kicked off on September 13th with our first pick for sparkling, Pinot Meunier for our sparkling program. Slow and steady ripening thanks to dry and mild weather allowed for wide picking windows for most varieties with fruit arriving to the winery in immaculate condition.
Production Notes
Harvested from 2 of our most terroir expressing vineyards, Heron Pond and Montague on November 2nd. The fruit was patiently waited upon until perfect ripeness and balance for picking. Once the juice was pressed it naturally started fermentation at 16 degrees in tank before sending down to barrel to finish. Each block underwent malolactic fermentation, to completion in barrel and was afforded an 18-month elevage in French oak, until it gained incredible complexity and balance.
Winemaker Notes
The nose starts with lovely baked red apples, lemon curd, phyllo pastry, whipped butter, and subtle nutmeg. This is complimented further with bright candied orange peel, marmalade, and toasted vanilla bean. All these characters carry through into the palate with a beautiful saline minerality coming from our limestone soils and subtle toasted character from the elegant oak choices.
Food Pairing Notes
Lobster mac and cheese with gruyere and black garlic
